WSJ: Amazon mulling potential Peloton acquisition; ‘other suitors’ also in the running

Update: The Financial Times now reports that Nike has also discussed an acquisition of Peloton. The report also says: “Other buyers are also likely to emerge, said those briefed on the matter, potentially including Apple and large private equity buyers.”

Peloton’s struggles over the last several months have been well-documented, leading to speculation about a potential acquisition by a Big Tech company. Comment: Is Peloton an acquisition target in 2022 by Apple, Amazon, Meta, etc?

In late 2019, Peloton aired a Holiday commercial that garnered media backlash. In early 2020, it became a media darling as the COVID–19 pandemic shut down gyms, and people were forced to work out at home for many months. On 12/21/20, Peloton’s stock peaked at $162.72. Today, it sits at $38.51. That puts it just above its $23.01 price around the time when the WHO declared a pandemic. That’s quite a rise and fall for a company with devoted subscribers and continue low churn. With a market cap of just 15 billion, it will be a prime acquisition target in 2022. Who will the buyer be? Let’s look at the options.

Well, Mr. Big is dead. Sorry, too late for spoiler alerts! And “I couldn’t help but wonder,” to quote the now-bereaved Carrie Bradshaw, is Peloton in on the game or not? Last night’s first episode of The Sex and the City reboot saw Big’s death while vigorously pedaling on a Peloton – the company is denying any involvement in the plot twist. The company stock did take a dip after the show aired, but this product placement, intentional or not, is likely a good thing for the brand.
