2020 has been a great gear for Peloton, and their leadership isn’t resting on its laurels. Today, Peloton announced it has hired a new global marketing chief.

NBCUniversal participated in Peloton’s Series E and Series F fundraising rounds in 2017 and 2018, and it ended up with a double-digit ownership stake in the company prior to Peloton’s IPO. NBCUniversal recently sold its entire stake in Peloton for an $86 million profit.

The 2020 Pelothon is officially half over, so it’s a good time to check in on the event to see how it’s going. If you aren’t participating in Pelothon 2020, check out this previous article I wrote. Let’s dig into my Pelothon review.

After a few months of using my Peloton bike, I now have a bird’s-eye view of some aspects of the platform and where improvements could be made. The main aspect of the platform I see issues with is the Peloton leaderboard and how it calculates total output.

Peloton Digital is Peloton’s app-only subscription service which gives access to Peloton’s library of content for use without Peloton’s bike or treadmill. Options for accessing it include a Peloton TV app, a Peloton Apple TV app, and Peloton apps for smartphones.

This week, I’ve had two different shipments arrive from Peloton’s apparel store, and I am really happy with the various shirts and shorts I received. As I was working out last night, I was thinking about Peloton’s missed opportunity with merchandise through the Peloton interface.

When purchasing a Peloton bike, a common question is whether or not to purchase Peloton’s essentials, works, or family packages. After owning a Peloton for a few months, I can see which of the Peloton bike accessories are worth the investment and which are not.

Despite being known as a cycling company, Peloton has many other options for workouts. Through its Peloton digital app for smartphones, tablets, Apple TV, and Roku, it offers boot camp classes, outdoor runs, weight lifting, and even meditation classes. Peloton also offers a treadmill with a similar experience to its cycling classes. Peloton is hinting at more energy (watts?) spent in this category, though.

Every Sunday evening, I take a look at the upcoming Peloton schedule for the week and map out which classes I plan to take. I prefer live classes, but on-demand at a scheduled time is my second favorite as it gives me that extra push on the leaderboard. While I was looking at the schedule this week, I noticed a 45-minute Grateful Dead ride with Jenn Sherman. I’ve listened to a little Grateful Dead in my life, but I’ve always wanted to dig into the band more, so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity.

Peloton has announced its summer 2020 Pelothon event taking place from July 13th through August 9th.

Peloton has been using its chest of patents to keep competitors from encroaching on its market share in recent months. After it put Flywheel out of business (and offered its customers a free trade-in), Peloton has turned its attention to Echelon. Echelon, who is headquartered in my hometown of Chattanooga, TN offers a similar product to Peloton’s bike with ditching the built-in screen in favor of an iPad. Peloton might by the hot brand in connected fitness, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t companies starting up left and right to nip at their heels. According to Bloomberg, Hydrow has raised $25 million to compete against Peloton. Hydrow makes a $2199 rowing machine that is competing for their share of the connected fitness market.

Peloton’s home delivery program is seen as one of their competitive advantages compared to competitors who require new customers to take delivery of their new bikes and then put them together.
