Lululemon flexes its tech muscles, experiments with generative AI

Like so many other companies, brands, and organizations, athleisure giant lululemon is looking to leverage the use of artificial intelligence for its customers on its e-commerce platform. Keep reading for more details.

The Canadian-born athleisure and activewear brand, Lululemon, has started to use generative AI. The clothing company is harnessing the efficiency of AI to help enhance the company’s search feature, which will allow customers to find exactly what it is they’re shopping for.

For example, if someone were to search for “black tights” on Lululelmon’s website, generative AI will intelligently ask whether the person wants black tights with pockets or black tights of a specific length. Julie Averill, Lululemon’s chief information officer and executive vice president said of the company’s AI experimentation and implementation (via Indian Express):

One of our competitive advantages is our data. We can understand a tremendous amount about our guests and what they want from us. Now, we can predict and make recommendations about new products that they might like and what’s available for them.

While Lululemon will be using AI to predict and recommend products to its customers, Averill explained that this is only one use case – the clothing company is also using generative AI to assist with actual product creation. Averill:

We are currently in the proof of concept stage, augmenting our product designers with Gen AI to explore faster and more efficient product creation. I think Gen AI is an extremely interesting space. When we look across product creation through guest experience, there’s a lot of potential, and we’re conducting a significant amount of tests to understand where the right place is to fully push in at this moment.

Lululemon recognizes the many uses and far-reaching potential that AI could bring to e-commerce, merchandise planning, product creation, and store clustering. Averill notes that there is a huge opportunity to capitalize on AI. “As retailers, we can build and also leverage the innovation that’s in the market.”

Connect the Watts’ Take

We are certainly interested to see where Lululemon takes AI. For better or worse, Lululemon is an industry leader in the apparel space, and other companies are sure to follow in its footsteps.
