With the popularity of at-home weight lifting continuing to rise, Hydrow has announced its acquisition of Speede Fitness as it seeks to develop its own strength product. Similar to Tonal, Speede develops digitally loaded, smart strength equipment.
While Speede may resemble Tonal in some ways, there are some key differences. For one, Speede offers stand-alone units that do not need to be bolted onto a wall. More impressively, Speede seems capable of delivering much heavier loading.
Where Tonal has a max resistance of 200lbs, Speede claims it is capable of delivering up to 2000lbs.
Of course, Hydrow will likely make some changes to Speede as they develop their own product. Hydrow says they plan on releasing its first consumer strength product as soon as next year.
Also planned for later this year, is a new premium version of its rower, called the Hydrow Vista.
Connect The Watts’ take
Whereas other connected fitness companies, like Peloton, seem to be struggling this year, it is impressive to see Hydrow continue to grow. With Hydrow’s sales up this year by over 23%, this acquisition of Speede seems like a smart move. Especially since this will allow Hydrow to be one of the few connected fitness companies to provide both high quality cardio and strength equipment.
As a comparison, neither Peloton or Tonal offer both strength and conditioning products. If you wanted the benefits of having both, you would have to pay for an additional monthly membership. Now, with Hydrow, they have a good argument that by going with them, you could potentially get the full package all under a single membership.
