As a reward for making it to the Super Bowl, the San Fransisco 49ers have each been gifted a Peloton Bike and a pair of cycling shoes – this is not the first time that the 49ers have taken care of its players, though. Head below to learn more.
The San Francisco 49ers will be battling Taylor Swift’s boyfriend’s team, The Kansas City Chiefs, during this Sunday’s Super Bowl LVIII (58), airing at 6:30 p.m. EST. As a reward for beating the Detroit Lions and making it to this year’s Super Bowl in a rematch against The Chiefs, the 49ers have rewarded its team with a new Peloton bike and cycling shoes to boot.
While it may seem like an extravagant gift to give each of the 53 San Fransisco 49ers (and each coach) a brand-new Peloton Bike and an accompanying pair of cycling shoes, this is par for the course for professional athletes. The Peloton Bike-as-gift-to-players was first reported by The Athletic‘s Matt Barrows:
Some might wonder if this type of extravagant gift is allowed, to which the answer is – of course. David Lombardi, also of The Athletic, notes of the NFL gift policy:

A Peloton Bike costs $1,445, and so the team’s decision to gift the bikes doesn’t break any of the NFL’s rules. This isn’t the first time that the San Fransisco 49ers management has gone above and beyond for its team in order to show their appreciation.

Reportedly, when former 49ers safety Jeff Fuller suffered a serious injury to his neck on a tackle during a game against the New England Patriots, Eddie DeBartolo, the 49ers owner at the time, left his luxury box, followed the ambulance to the hospital, was there for Fuller, cried with him, and eventually, under absolutely no legal obligation, arranged to pay Fuller $100,000 a year for the rest of his life. Fuller never played in the NFL after the injury.
An owner who, under no legal obligation, pays one of his players $100,000 a year for the rest of this life for an injury that wasn’t his fault to begin with? 10/10! Sports Illustrated provides another example:
When Niner fullback Harry Sydney and his wife, Nancy, had their third child, DeBartolo sent flowers two hours after the birth. ‘Two hours!’ said Sydney. When linebacker Jim Fahnhorst’s wife, Kim, delivered twins, DeBartolo’s flowers weighed 70 pounds. Every time the 49ers win their division—and every Easter, too—every player and staff member gets two dozen long-stemmed red roses for his wife or mother or girlfriend.
These over-the-top kind gestures from DeBartolo seemed to have rubbed off on his nephew, Jed Yor, the current 49ers CEO. York this week announced that the 49ers will cover the expenses of the entire organization as it flies out to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII:
We’re going to make sure that all staff and interns and everybody, they get to go. And we’re doing multiple team charters that are going. I mean, I couldn’t tell you all the details off the top of my head, but there’s a lot of alumni that are going. People are fired up.
