The best Tonal alternatives in 2024

While Tonal may have been one of the first to offer digitally loaded strength equipment, there are more new options coming out every single year. Many of which have their own unique benefits, and all of which are lower in cost.

So today, let’s cover each of the best Tonal alternatives available in 2024.

Evaluating Tonal alternatives

Before I get into the list, I want to break down seven useful categories I use to help evaluate and compare alternatives to Tonal:

  • Resistance Capacity: what is the max weight that can be loaded?
  • Product Quality: are the equipment and accessories well made? (I’ll rate this on a ten-point scale with 10 being extremely high quality)
  • Form Factor: what benefits and drawbacks are there with the equipment?
  • Safety: how well is the equipment designed to keep you safe? (I’ll rate this on a ten-point scale with 10 being extremely safe)
  • Features With Membership: which features are available with a membership?
  • Features Not Requiring Membership: which features remain available should you forego the membership?
  • Cost with Membership: what is the cost including the membership? (for this article I will be combining the upfront cost in in addition to five years of the membership cost for five years)
  • Cost without Membership: what is the cost without a membership?

Comparing to Tonal

In order to compare Tonal alternatives, we first should probably cover exactly where Tonal falls in the categories listed above.

Features with MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Programs, Classes, Progress Tracking, Custom Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Features without MembershipJust Lift Mode
Cost with 5-Year Membership$7,095
Cost without Membership$3,495

Of course, there are a few things that need to be clarified there. In terms of Product Quality, Tonal’s lower score of 7 is due to the common issue members have of the arms breaking overtime. If this issue was not the case, Tonal would receive an 8 or 9 as the equipment is otherwise very high in quality.

One of the biggest drawbacks of Tonal is its high price, with an initial cost of $3,495 (not including the smart accessories) and $60 per month membership. While the membership may be better overall when compared to alternatives, it offers the least if you ever decide to cancel it. For example, Tonal is the only digital strength equipment to lock its smart training modes and custom workout builder behind the membership paywall.

Tonal alternative #1: Vitruvian Trainer+

If you want to lift weights heavier than 200lbs, than the Vitruvian Trainer+ is one of the best options with over double that amount.

Resistance Capacity440lbs Max
Product Quality9
Form FactorFloor Based Platform
Safety10
Features with MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Programs, Classes, Progress Tracking, Custom Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Features without MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Custom Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Cost with 5-Year Membership$4,180
Cost without Membership$2,990
Vitruvian Trainer+ Deadlift

The Vitruvian Trainer+ has several benefits over Tonal, but the 440lb max loading may be the biggest among them. For serious strength training, even high level athletes can see substantial results with this.

The product is extremely durable, the accessories best in class, and with the highest safety rating possible due to a range-of-motion check that takes place before every set. This ensures the Vitruvian Trainer+ will deload right away if you get stuck or go outside your safe range-of-motion.

The biggest downside of the Vitruvian Trainer is that since it is floor based, there are no options for certain movements like standing chest press or lat rows.

Vitruvian Trainer+ Bench Press

While there is a well designed membership offered with a good variety of new classes and programs added regularly, it is much more optional than Tonals. Even without a membership, you still have access to all the smart lifting modes, as well as the ability to create your own custom workouts.

Additionally, while the membership is $39 per month, Vitruvian does offer a lifetime membership option for just $1,190. This helps keep the total cost down substantially if you plan on keeping it for five or more years (which I would expect when making this large a purchase).

Tonal alternative #2: Beyond Power Voltra I

One of the newest and most exciting Tonal alternatives to hit the market is Beyond Power’s Voltra I.

Resistance Capacity400lbs Max
Product Quality10
Form FactorFloor Based and Squat Rack Attachable
Safety9
Features with MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Programs, Classes, Progress Tracking, Custom Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Features without MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Data after Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Cost with 5-Year MembershipUnknown
Cost without Membership$4,198 – $4698

There are a few things that make the Voltra I pretty compelling. The biggest of which is that a form factor is smaller and more adaptable than any other device. Consisting of two handholds, each weighing just over 12lbs, there is some serious capacity in a small package.

These handholds can be attached to a floor platform to be used like Vitruvian, but with some additional accessories, they can also be attached to a squat rack. This allows Voltra I to be used for both floor based and horizontal cable movements.

While the Voltra I is expensive upfront, it also screams high quality as well, with a device so slick it looks like it was made from Apple.

The biggest unknown here is with the membership, as it is still in the works. So price and features that membership will provide are still a bit of a mystery. That said, the company states that the smart lifting modes, and data after workouts will always continue to remain free.

Tonal alternative #3: Speediance Gym Monster

Speediance actually has two devices on this list, both of which are quite a bit cheaper than many of the other options. Especially considering that Speediance currently comes with a free life-time membership.

Features without MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Programs, Classes, Progress Tracking, Custom Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Cost with 5-Year Membership$3,049
Cost without Membership$3,049

With Speediance, we are back with the 200lb max loading that Tonal provides, though at a cost that is substantially lower. Unlike Tonal which is wall mounted, the Speediance Gym Monster is free standing. And unlike the Vitruvian Trainer, there are also uprights here to allow for horizontal movements.

The drawback is there is a noticeable drop-off in quality. Everything from the platform to its accessories, while certainly useable, are far from premium. The safety features here as well are not quite up to par with the others, though they have become better over the past year through regular updates.

Speediance Workout

The other big benefit here is that there is no cost to the membership, which can help save you a ton of money long term. The downside is that the membership offers far less in terms of quality classes and smart features.

Tonal alternative #4: Speediance Gym Pal

In terms of price, the Speediance Gym Pal is one of the most budget friendly options.

Resistance Capacity200lbs Max
Product Quality5
Form FactorFree Standing Platform
Safety6
Features with MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Programs, Classes, Progress Tracking, Custom Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Features without MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Programs, Classes, Progress Tracking, Custom Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Cost with 5-Year Membership$1,999
Cost without Membership$1,999

The big difference between the Speediance Gym Pal and Gym Monster is that the Gym Pal is much smaller and only consists of a floor platform.

If you don’t need the uprights, than at under $2,000, the Gym Pal is going to be one of the best options available.

Tonal alternative #5: Innodigym P1 Max

Another brand new alternative to go on sale is the Innodigym P1 Max, which offers a compelling combination of higher loads with a lower price tag.

Resistance Capacity330lbs Max
Product Quality4
Form FactorFree Standing Platform
Safety4
Features with MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Custom Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Features without MembershipSmart Lifting Modes, Custom Workouts, Just Lift Mode
Cost with 5-Year Membership$1,799
Cost without Membership$1,799

While the Innodigym P1 Max may offer the most loading at the best price, it is also lowest in quality. Both in terms of the device, the accessories, and the included app. There is no cost for membership here, but that is also because there is nothing that a membership would be needed for, though there are a handful of mediocre workouts included on the app.

Tonal final alternative comparison

So now that we’ve covered the best alternatives to Tonal, let’s compare them again side-by-side. Here I’ve changed the Features categories to 10 point scoring system for simplicity, so 10 would mean that the equipment offers the highest amount of features.
