Concept2 has unveiled its latest innovation in the fitness space: the StrengthErg. Known for their high-performance rowing machines, Concept2’s new device is designed to bring the benefits of strength training without the need for traditional weights. The StrengthErg uses air resistance, much like Concept2’s rowing and ski machines, to help users build strength in a low-impact, highly customizable way.
This is Concept2’s fourth major fitness product and their first strength training-focused machine, filling a gap in their product lineup. As explained by the team behind the project to Darkhorse Rowing, the StrengthErg was designed not only for performance athletes but also for aging populations and those looking to maintain or improve strength safely at home.
A unique approach to strength training
The StrengthErg offers a different experience than typical strength training equipment. Using Concept2’s signature flywheel technology, the machine allows users to perform a range of strength-building exercises including leg presses, upper pulls, and chest presses. It adjusts dynamically to the user’s force, making it suitable for a wide variety of fitness levels. Whether you’re focusing on low-rep maximum strength or endurance-based strength training, the StrengthErg allows for versatility and safety.
According to Concept2, the StrengthErg is particularly suited for those looking for a way to train safely at home without needing to worry about the risks associated with heavy weights, such as barbells or dumbbells. Users can work on maximal strength safely, knowing they can’t “fail” in the same way as with traditional weightlifting.
Performance tracking and connectivity
The StrengthErg is compatible with Concept2’s PM5 Performance Monitor and can also connect to the ErgData app via phone. This allows users to log workouts, track progress, and integrate data into their Concept2 training logs. Concept2 has mentioned that this is the first machine in their lineup that doesn’t necessarily require the PM5 monitor for operation, as workouts can be tracked directly via phone.
What makes the StrengthErg stand out further is the per-rep focus—unlike traditional erg machines, which measure continuous work over time, the StrengthErg measures individual reps. This allows users to train in different styles, such as performing high-resistance low-rep sets, or focusing on endurance with higher rep counts.
Designed for longevity and variety
Concept2’s new strength machine is also designed to accommodate attachments, hinting at potential versatility for future workouts. Users can isolate different movements, mix and match with other exercises, and incorporate the StrengthErg into broader training programs, including rowing and skiing.
While the machine is not yet finalized, Concept2 anticipates a Q1 2025 release. The price is expected to be around $1,350 for the basic model, with an option to include the PM5 monitor for $1,500.
The StrengthErg fills a unique niche, particularly for users interested in safe, effective strength training that doesn’t rely on traditional weights or equipment. It’s a promising addition to Concept2’s lineup, blending the company’s well-known durability with an innovative take on strength development.
